New Topless Bar Proposed in Detroit

According to this article in the Warren Weekly, there is a proposal to build a new adult entertainment center (topless bar) on the south side of 8 Mile Rd. just east of Mound Rd.  Warren City Council member Melinda Moore attended a hearing in January before the Detroit Building and Safety Engineering Department.

Weak Opposition
According to the article, general opinion of those in attendance was against the proposal.  Tami Salisbury, executive director of the Eight Mile Boulevard Association argued "...that topless clubs tend to diminish economic development activities." Ms. Moore added "What happens in Detroit doesn't necessarily stay in Detroit."

Undoubtedly, some will argue against such a business on moral grounds, simply because they "don't like it."  I do not believe liking or not liking something is grounds for legal action.  I don't like a baby crying in a restaurant, but I tolerate it.  I hope we don't get so restrictive in our laws that we someday criminalize babies in restaurants.

What To Do

I see no reason to spend time, money, and other resources regulating this issue. A free market system will be self-leveling. Area residents will determine the viability of such a business with their spending. If the market is strong enough to support an additional topless bar, we should not suppress a would-be entrepreneur. If there is not enough support, one of the bars will go out of business. Presumably, the least efficient business would fold. This is the nature of the free market, indeed this is nature - survival of the fittest.
